Questions: Relationships

  • Do you believe that God should be the one to fulfill all our needs? Does the fact that God said it wasn’t good for Adam to be alone (Genesis 2:18) conflict with this idea?
  • In saying it wasn’t good for Adam to be alone, did God mean that it wasn’t good for Adam to be unmarried or simply without other human companionship?
  • Is family merely biological or something else?
  • What is the difference between friendship and marriage?
  • What is the purpose of dating? Marriage? Friendship? Family?
  • Where does the idea that one’s spouse should be their best friend come from?
  • What is the relative importance/priority of various relationships: spouse, friends, family, other members of your church? From where do these priorities come?
  • How do you define love? Infatuation? Intimacy? Dating? Sex?
  • What does the Bible say about dating? Marriage? Sex?
  • Is your view on relationships informed by the Bible? Culture? Your faith?
  • How does your faith influence the way you date? How do you act like a Christian when dating?
  • What relational advice would you give if someone were to ask you?
  • What do you think about dating a non-Christian (and/or “missionary dating”)?
  • Do you feel that there is a tension between focusing on God and your significant other? If so, how might this tension be resolved?
  • Are there rules for dating / marriage? What are they? Where do they come from?
  • Which works better: when each person seeks to fulfill their own needs in a relationship, or when each person seeks to make sure each other’s needs are being met?
  • When in an exclusive relationship, to what degree is appreciating a person beside your significant other (their beauty, talents, charm, etc.) appropriate or inappropriate? Does your answer vary based on whether the person is of the same sex as opposed to opposite sex? Why? (What if the person has a bi- or homosexual orientation? Does that affect your answer?) What level of friendship with others is acceptable? Can a single person be good friends with someone whom is not single? Why or why not?
